If you've been following my indie and simulation game coverage over on MentalGamers and this blog, you know I can't resist a solid driving survival loop.
Today, we’re checking out a full playthrough of the Arctic Drive open beta.
I’ve been keeping a close eye on this one, and I finally got the chance to hit the icy roads for myself.
This beta is a shorter scenario designed to test the core mechanics, but it still throws you right into the deep end.
We start out by scrambling for basic supplies, hooking up a camper trailer to our truck, and trying not to freeze while driving blind through some pretty heavy snow.
I’ll admit, handling a truck with summer tires on sheer ice definitely tested my patience.
But the atmosphere of the environment is fantastic.
During this run, we managed to set up a mobile cooking station inside the trailer, scavenged a creepy abandoned supermarket (that was weirdly completely out of food), and eventually tracked down a massive plane crash site just off the main road.
The main goal of the run was gathering enough scrap from the crash to craft a flare gun at the nearby workbench.
Firing it off calls in an airdrop and successfully finishes the scenario.
I will say, I got a little too distracted reading the final end-screen message and legitimately almost died of hypothermia in the snow before I managed to sprint back to the safety of the truck's heater! If you're into indie survival games, you'll want to check out the full run below.
Grab a warm drink, settle in, and let me know in the comments if you’ve tried Arctic Drive yet!
